From Bijou To Beautiful: Making The Most Of A Small Garden

~ They say that good things come in small packages, but not every homeowner would agree. If you have a compact garden, you might think that your options are limited. The good news is that there are myriad ways to make a small yard look bigger. Here are some simple tips to help you create a beautiful garden out of a bijou space.

Trimming Hedges and Trees

Trees and hedges create stunning aesthetics, but they can also limit light exposure and make smaller spaces look cramped. If you are trying to open up your garden, let natural light flood the area and create the illusion of a larger, more vast space. For instance, I can’t possibly trim my tall Palms. Even my landscape company can’t reach the crowns without huge extended tools and either they or I have to hire someone else to trim the dead branches. It is really worth exploring services offered by tree care companies like https://lineagetreecare.com/. If you have several trees in the garden, you most likely have some of the branches blocking natural light. (We had a full moon yesterday and I couldn’t even see it from my second-floor balcony) If your hedges are overgrown, then trimming, pruning, and cutting can make an incredible difference. If you are considering tree surgery of any kind, make sure you enlist the help of professionals. They sure know where to cut the branches and at what angle, so the tree can thrive and regrow without disease settling on the open wound.

Creating Separate Areas

Many of us use our gardens for different purposes. If you have children, your backyard may be used as a functional outdoor play area or a nice run for your house pets. If you enjoy relaxing outside, you might use your garden to chill out at the end of the day or on the weekend with a good book and a cup of tea. If you have a passion for gardening, tending to plants and growing vegetables might take up most of your spare time. You may enjoy inviting friends and family over and hosting drinks or al fresco dinners. Whatever you use your garden for, you can create a more versatile space by separating the area into different zones. You can do this using different materials, or by sectioning off specific parts using furniture. Design a garden that works for your family, and base the plans on how you like to spend your time outdoors.

Making Use of Height

If you do not own a huge garden, it is a great idea to take advantage of the potential height of your growing plants. If you do not have a lot of room for flower beds and planters, why not use your fencing or create outdoor shelving units to layer plants and create visual features such as living walls and floral displays? This way, you can inject color and vibrancy without taking up the whole garden. If you are looking for inspiration, check out pages like https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pmartinza/-small-gardens-/. A great idea is to focus on plants and trees that grow upwards, rather than outwards. Adding height to the garden will maximize the space, create multilayered ambiance and will make you feel like you have a much bigger garden.

If you do not have a vast garden at the back or side of your home, do not panic. There are multiple ways you can design a more versatile space and create the illusion of a larger, lighter, more open garden. Compact does not equal cramped! You just might be pleasantly surprised at the difference a few simple changes, clever ideas, colorful plant selection, and simple outdoor design tricks can make.

Make it a very green day, my friends.

  1. Always full of great ideas as a small garden can be made to look beautiful too just takes a little imagination and knowhow. I love the layering of plants on the house, but if you are a bit irksome about creepy crawlies this is not for you, lol or rather not for me shudder spiders. Beautiful photos. I agree with getting a good tree surgeon to care for the trees and hedges I always did this. I was also allergic to conifer hedges used to get rashes all over my arms. Take care.

  2. Hi Luda…I was wondering if you could help me…how can I stop weeds from growing? One of my friends told me to use cleaning Vinegar!!! Is this an option? My only worry is because I have Charlie (doggie) would this affect him in anyway?
