Florida Softshell Turtle 🐢

Driving back home from yet another dental appointment, I had to suddenly stop the car in the middle of the road. This little guy was just lying in the middle of the street with cars in the front just swirling around him.

I stopped, took my nursing blue gloves (always have them in the car, in case I have a sudden urge to garden), put them on and picked this turtle by his sides. He wasn’t too heavy but covered in some chalky white substance. I easily transferred him to the grassy patch to the side of the road.

Knowing that he will continue to thrive and possibly lay eggs made me so happy 😁

Guys – did you see the shape of his head? Unreal! And she/he blinks!

According to Wikipedia (quick source)-A. ferox is almost entirely aquatic, only emerging from the water to bask or to lay eggs. It prefers the still waters of ponds, streams, lakes, and swamps. Like all softshells, it is very fast-moving in water and on land. This species is carnivorous, consuming fish, insects, crustaceans, and mollusks. It may also scavenge.

Animal Spot website reported that these reptiles may live for more than 20 years in the wild.  The female of the species can nest 2-7 times and are able to produce almost 225 eggs every year. That’s a lot!!

    1. Oh, so interesting, Peter. Thank you for teaching me about that scientist. I just looked him up. Can’t wait to read more about him: “No person must ever harm or destroy life unless absolutely necessary”. Grateful to expend my knolwedge horizons.
